Detroit river walleye run

I have to pick up my fishing partner west of st thomas on # 3 Hwy already. And I will be pulling the boat this trip with a smaller vehicle than I would normally, and I'll take my chances on #3 over 401. If I have to stop quick...... Less chances of a issue on #3. Not the quickest I understand.

Fish 4 fun, I did they drive from Ingersoll to Essex every other weekend for yrs. Would take 401 on the way there, and hyw 3 on the way back. Hwy 3 takes about 30 to 40 minutes longer, but much nicer drive. Used to live that way along time ago, used Colchester marina then, don't know if that gets you close enough to where you want to fish, nice marina back then, can't comment on condition today? Good luck

Just checking the forecast, chance of rain, not too concerned about that, cause I won't melt, but they are talking about 20km winds from the south gusting to 30kms..... Never fishing there before, is that problematic? Other than making it feel colder lol? I really don't know if the river gets , Lake Erie rough, or just choppy. Thanks. I should say, again, to be clear, 20' legend deep v.

Fished there yesterday for the first time. Landed 6, lost 4, and missed at least a dozen before we got the hang of the bites. It's different fishing for sure, but once on to it there is no problem. Want to go back tomorrow, but think I''ll go down to Long Point.

Here is a little more bureaucracy for those fishing the US side of the "D". Looks like you are supposed to report to the Customs Telephone Reporting Centre when returning to Canadian waters (my interpretation) after having entered US water. You only need do this once if weaving back and forth between countries. See http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/travel-voyage/pb-pp-eng.html . I doubt anyone ever does this, but if you somehow get caught, it's a $1000 fine.

That nonsense started 3 or 4 years ago...not too many guys call in but you're supposed to. I tried a few times but often when it's busy you can't get through anyway. That's another reason I just fish the Cdn side whenever possible. Don't kid yourself by thinking that the authorities on both sides are not watching, they are.

The river can get surprisingly rough at times but from my experience its caused mainly by strong South & S-W winds. 20-30km is fishable but boat control gets a bit more difficult. If the South breezes are a problem you can fish up around the river bend by the Casino and Walkers distillery and you kind of protected.

I second that @fish4fun. Thanks for all your contributions @G.Mech!

Well thanks guys. I'm certainly no expert but have put in a fair bit of time down there and learned a lot thanks to a few other guys who showed me the ropes and shared good info (such as @big rod & @reeldrag to name a few). Hope all the others who give it whirl this year do as well as @Ingold Archery did on his maiden voyage, that is pretty impressive!

@G.Mech , any body of water you don't fish? Maybe I'll see you chasing Browns on Ontario soon. The boat is loaded and pointing towards Pt. Dalhousie. This week should be a go if the mud line isn't too far offshore. I better not say anything more about Lake O, I was told this is a Long Point only forum once.

I'm pretty much a West end Lake Erie guy now but try to get from end to end each season. I really do look forward to jiggin' the D every spring as much as possible so I haven't been to Lake O much in the last few years. Fished Nipissing & Nosbonsing lots in the past but not so much anymore. I really enjoy flying into my friends camps up around Chapleau (lake names are top secret of course....) as well as the odd trip to Quinte. I plan to do a bit on Lake Simcoe this summer and maybe St Clair this fall if things work out. Other than that I try to fish when I have some spare time......

Okay so I mentioned all these lakes and not once did I say 'Long Point' but I'm pretty sure it's okay on Stomp's, he seems pretty flexible....

That's a lot of traveling. Nothing ventured nothing gained.

Down at Detroit again today, only 3 nice eaters, but lots of chances. Very light bites, still cold water and a SE wind. All in all still a great day. We've been catching our fish deep, 35 - 40 fow, not as clean today.
Thanks to G. Mech for all his great info, and all others that shared there tips. This place is awesome to fish.

I might be one of those guys that have zipped over the border and back ( not knowing) you had to do that calling in crap or the fine. So that may not happen again.

One thing I will say is don't anybody be scared to try fishing down there, there is every make and model of fishing craft down there, and the current is quite easy to deal with, whether it's in a kayak, back trolling, or with electric, once you figure it out. I seen it all this weekend.

In my experience, boat and freighter traffic are the biggest contributers to most of the rough water on the river.
