We originally planned to just bring the canoe but then I had the idea that we should bring the boat. Sure it’s more expensive on gas, but what a luxury to have the boat while camping. The amount of gear you can haul with no effort is amazing, especially when the weather is cold and you want to stay comfortable.
We had planned to leave Friday night, but we opted against that due to a faulty trailer light I had to deal with, plus docking, etc. in the dark would have been miserable. So we headed up Saturday morning and got there around 9:30 or so and headed out on the water to scope out some fishing spots + boat to the campsite. I marked lots of fish on the side of the lake we put in at, and not a single fish on our end of the lake… so thank god I had the boat because it would have been a grind fishing from the canoe.
We set up the campsite, ate some food and had a beer and then headed out fishing at 2:30. I started off trolling bottom bouncers, nothing, marked lots of suspended marks so I trolled a spoon on the downrigger + a crankbait, nothing again. Put on a blade bait and started working near a waterfall that I had marked a lot of fish, again nothing. So by this time I’m feeling frustrated but eliminating water and techniques to find the mood of the fish. My next choice was a drop shot + a worm, this is when we finally started to have luck and found what they wanted! We finished fishing at 6 that evening with 3 walleye and 2 crappie (all released).
The next morning I came back out, and the fish seemed to have lock jaw.. I was marking fish but nothing would commit. Everyone I talked to came to the same conclusion as I did. Again I tried a lot of different baits but the drop shot was the only thing I got a bite and I ended a really tough few hours of morning fishing with 1 walleye and 1 sunfish. After that I went back to the campsite and we ate + went for a hike.
After we were done the hike + eating again of course aha, we dropped my mom off at the vehicles and she headed up to Sudbury to see my sister and we headed out fishing for an hour and a half. This was the most productive fishing of the trip, we caught a handful of walleye, a handful of crappie & a rock bass. Again all of these fish were mainly caught on the drop shot, with the exception of some being on a jig + worm.
The drop shot was certainly the best bait of the weekend and out performed 10:1 to anything else. The fall colours were in full swing, and taking the boat camping was a success that I can’t wait to do again
