Off Topic Turtles are nesting !

Stopped my van on con #2 Lynden and helped a big paint off the road, was heading for a plowed field 1/4 mile wide?

I warned my daughter and her lesser half on Saturday that the largest turtle I've ever seen was just up the highway from where they live.

Saw it just at daybreak. Had I hit it, they would have had to tow the truck away.

Massive. 🌻

I made a big mistake the morning I spotted Mama Snapper as I was letting my old girl out for her usual and she wandered over to Mama for a look. Well Mama just about took her nose off and now my dog knows to stay away from turtles. A Garter snake bit her nose was she was young so she scared silly of snakes already. Unfortunately because of the rude encounter Mama did an about face and headed back to the pond but it looks like she made a pit stop in my garden as there was two holes dug. I covered the spots so raccoons won't dig up the eggs and will wait now for 80-90 days to see what happens. Two years ago I was able to escort about 38 little snappers back to the pond as she had made a nest right near my back deck. When they hatch they all hatch the same day and depending on the temperatures over the course of development determines the sex of the hatch. Too cool they will be male , too warm they will be female but if temps are up and down is when you will get a mixed batch.

Watched a big mama snapper just sitting on the sidewalk this morning on Beechwood Ave. I just hope no little kids decide to go investigate what it is.

I would've been that kid in my younger days lol. Although I was very familiar with them at a very young watching an old local nicknamed turtle dundee walking the ditches by my house in his bare feet with his dog in the summer months catching them by hand then letting out the most memorable laugh each time he caught one lol. That lasted years before was banned from Ontario and moved to bc

I was driving on Cheapside road by Shelter Cove yesterday.I came upon a large painted turtle crossing the road.So I pulled over and put my four ways on.I got out of my truck and helped her on her journey of life.I will always assist nature when needed. They have a right to be here as we do.

I think the Prov. Park has special covers to put over top of any confirmed nests down on The Point.
I just used a folding hard plastic chair placed over top to deter raccoons for the first week or two.
Seems like Rocky follows the scent trail left behind by Mama Turtle to find her nest.

Dead painted on 52 in Copetown the other night. Just south of town near the trailer park. Can't see how people just cant go around.....
