Smelt

There are about 200 to 300 dead smelt on the beach in front of my place at L.P. this morning.

we where out perch fishing yesterday and saw lots floating

Saw tons on friday and sunday. The jumbos are gutfull of them too. Seems they love the large minnows due to this

What size are the smelt? I have caught a few small pike with some 10 inchers in them.

Do you think it might have been a sudden change in the water temperature?

The ones on the beach were about 6 to 8 ln. They were fairly fresh. Reminded me of the days when we would net them. There used to be so many on the beach we would have to bury them because of the stink.

I read about this in 2012 i bet the smell was horrible

The pike were caught in Port Royal and I haven't seen smelt that big since before we needed to pay for a fishing license to restock our waters. It would be nice to believe those large annual runs would come back.

I remember going to the lake with the family when I was a kid to catch smelt.
Does anybody still do this?
