Looking for comments on the pros and cons of trolling plates v drift socks for when Dwn Rigging . I have a volvo DP and the slowest I can get it dwn to in dead water is around 4 Kts , + or - .
Also I see most trolling plates aren,t recommended for Volvo I/O.
I can see the advantage of convenience of the trolling plate over deploying and retrieving the drift socks and storing . But also looking at the boat handling aspects also

On my boat (22 footer) I can only get down to 2 mph so I use two 30 inch drift socks which slow me down to under 1 mph and then I use throttle to get back up to 1.4.
I attach the socks, one on each side and fasten them to a cleat at the front. The rope is set so the sock is right at the stern and doesn't go past. This way it doesn't interfere when netting a fish.
I used to use one 6 foot sock out the back but it always seemed to steer the boat . Hope this helps.
