Spearfishing leads to $5,000 in fines
A Montreal man has been fined a total of $5,000 for fishing-related offences that took place in Erieau on Aug. 17, 2017.
According to a media release issued Monday by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Van Lao Nguyen was found by conservation officers with 33 large mouth bass, 41 crappie and 10 panfish in three plastic coolers. The conservation officers also found him with a spear and a spotlight to attract fish while in an inflatable motorized boat.
Nguyen pleaded guilty after his matter was heard before a justice of the peace in Chatham on May 24.
He was fined $3,000 for fishing without a licence, $1,000 for possessing a spear within 30 metres of the water's edge and $1,000 for using an artificial light to attract fish. His fishing gear was permanently forfeited and he is prohibited from fishing for five years.
