Just found this gem on the TC website (like anyone every goes there to find this stuff) on which they are looking at implementing a fee structure directed at boat owners to offset costs for abandoned, wrecked, and unfit vessels on the waterways. The proposed fee appears to be flat rate of $10 every five years, regardless of whether you own a 14’ tinner with a 15hp or a 49’ yacht (of course). They are asking for your feedback on the proposal by Nov 9. Have your say if you’re so inclined.

It was just a matter of time for the government to figure out how to squeeze more money out of us. After reading through that article my initial impression is this;
45 percent of Pleasure Crafts are located in Ontario out of 2.7 million ?
2000 known problem wrecks but most located in B.C. and the rest located in Quebec or Maritime waters.
They say it will take the burden off taxpayers that don't own a boat ; which of course is B.S. because Transport Canada and the Cdn. Coast Guards main budget still comes from our taxes. This just creates another pot of gold for them to dance around.

I have no doubt that this is going to happen because no matter how much we whine or cry poor ( because they did give us a chance to say something ... right ? ) the government is out for another cash grab.

If $10 every 5 years for your boat license is a problem, wait until they implement capital gains tax when you sell your house.......it's coming.

$10 over five years? The administrative cost will be more then the revenue it generates. Find the average lifespan of a boat in Canada, divide that by 5, multiply that by 10, add that as a one time fee to license a boat. Done.

Oh come on...everyone knows if you own a boat you are filthy rich and have thousands and thousands of extra $$$$$$$$$$ laying around...
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH..........:LOL::LOL::LOL::LOL::LOL::LOL::LOL::LOL:

There ya go, trying to stuff common sense into ANYTHING the government touches…😆

It’s not a problem per se, it’s just the BS clandestine way they roll this crap out and also the logic behind it, as Old Cut pointed out.
Regarding your other point, a well thought out prorated capital gains tax structure may have prevented the total effing mess our housing market is in, I would have been all for it. Who deserves to make 300K tax free on a house they have owned for 3 years, which, as a byproduct has made home ownership completely unattainable for our children in the foreseeable future.
