My eye doctor calls me up to book another check up ( optic pressure & field vision test ) and tells me OHIP isn't going to cover the field vision test next year and it will cost me 45 bucks... ? Makes me wonder what else they are cutting ?

New immigrants and refugees get the same coverage as those of us that have been paying premiums for 40 years (seniors).
That just ain't right.
Seniors get taxed on money they were already taxed on, and any income they saved on their own for retirement.
The govt are a bunch of crooks.

There has been no ohip premiums for individuals since 2004 when the Employer Health Tax was implemented...

I payed for it since 1988 till 2004 and I know the services were a lot better than

I left Ontario when I was 15 and didn't move back until I was 38 almost 39. I'm 53 now. As I understand it, OHIP is far from what it used to be. Things like eye exams, chiropractic are no longer covered even if you're a person with disabilities on either CPP disability or OW/ODSP. UNLESS it's recommended by your eye doctor or chiro as being necessary and they provide you with a referral to a specialist. (IE I had a stye 6 years ago that wouldn't go away on it's own removed surgically and that WAS covered as the eye doctor referred me to the Ivy Eye Clinic at St Joes to have the procedure done.) Apparently the same thing applies with certain things your family physician may recommend. To be covered, they have to formally give you a referral to a specialist. Last time my family doctor did that, the "specialist" she sent me to walked in the room, looked at the file then told me to rectify what my doctor was concerned about, just give blood and lose weight. He was in the room for a total of 35 seconds maybe. THANKS FOR NOTHIN!!! Even my family doctor was pissed when I told her that was what this so called "specialist" said after a 35 second discussion.

But short of any referral, even a person with disabilities and drawing a CPP disability pension like myself, for an eye exam, unless my wife's benefits cover it, (sometimes they do, sometimes they don't) I am required to pay out of pocket for things like eye exams, or chiropractic. When it comes to chiro, although it would help (temporarily) it won't rectify the underlying conditions, (surgery might, but they keep telling me I'm too young. Been a long time since I heard that) and to put it quite simply, I cannot afford chiropractic anymore, and haven't been able to for years. It's an expense I just can't justify, especially considering the fees they charge and the number of times the chiropractor would want to see me (3-4x per week) so when faced with the reality of big time chiro bills (which exhausted any and all savings I had when I first got hurt almost 10 years ago before my CPP disability pension was approved) or helping with bills and groceries around the house, I chose to keep my marriage in tact, by helping keep the roof over our heads and with the food we eat when I can.

I've been told that both, along with many other things, used to be covered, but because I wasn't here then to know, and even if I had been, back then I wasn't and wouldn't have been a person with disabilities so I wouldn't know whether that's true or not.

I get my eye exams covered because I have type 2 diabetes. Some of my drugs are covered under the seniors drug plan, some aren't. I dont access any out of OHIP services as not needed. I think dental should be covered but no. Luckily, my wife is status Cree so everything for her is covered..medical, drugs, dental..so its just me to pay for.

Medpoint! I gave up on our "OHIP" system 10 years ago and joined Medpoint in London as a member. Every year I pay my fee, get a 5 hour physical, and absolutely excellent care. They have discovered things with my health that my useless "OHIP" doctor missed for decades.
My Last 5 hour physical was last month and a possible cardiac issue (possible blockage) as discovered. Am I concerned...yes a little...am I grateful that it was discovered...absolutely!
As OHIP covers less and less I would encourage anyone reading this to look at other excellent options that are available to you. It just might save your life!
Life = more time FISHING ...need I say more! :) Had to add some humour at the end. :)

Eye exams are only covered once per year. I also am type 2 and have cateracts as well as macular degeneration but only the standard eye exam is covered by ohip.

Not hard to figure, healthy eyes or battery plants.

my wife and I (65 & 64) with moderate coverage pay $5k year..... still pay a lot out of pocket even with coverage.

I am a type one diabetic my self working as a general contractor just me and my dad no bennifits or any thing special like that so i pay out of pocket for all my own medication each insuling pack is over 200 bucks and i have 2 types (long and short acting) so i pay over 400 a month just for the insluin not counti g the needlies test strips and finger pokers. I just did an eye test first one in ten years i get one free every year but when they asked me if i wanted the picture taken of the back of my eyes ( that shows if you have bleeding caused by the diabetes) it was 50$ and thats the main thing a diabetic needs tested so the "free" eye check isnt covering the diabetes part of the test bullshit if you ask me.

I had that issue with my former family doctor as well. She read the paperwork and told me, " I can't answer these questions without jeopardizing my reputation and my license to practice medicine in this country." She had immigrated from South Africa to Canada several years before becoming my doctor when her predecessor my first family doctor here when I moved back, had a baby and decided she didn't want to be a doctor anymore and quit.

The questions for CPP disability and the CRA disability tax credit are different. Also, the CRA does NOT consider a chiropractor as being a "specialist" where CPP did, therefore, the report CPP had from my chiropractor, that was also sent to the CRA, was totally ignored by the CRA despite the fact that it was MUCH more thorough in it's explanation of what the underlying conditions are and how they impact my day to day life. My then family doctor disagreed with the chiropractor and voiced that in her report to the CRA even though she herself had done NO xrays of any kind, where the chiro HAD done so.

There were several questions that she said she couldn't or wouldn't answer in my favor to get the CRA tax credit, including, "Is your patient's condition considered severe and long term" per their definitions given in the paperwork. I looked at her and reminded her that I could NOT work in my chosen profession any longer, and although at that time I was looking for work after graduating college (which I went back to school to give myself a chance) was uncertain as to whether or not I'd be able to find employment at all because of the conditions that ail me. She said, NOPE. I reminded her that she herself, to my surprise, agreed with the chiropractor in saying that I would be dealing with the pain caused by the underlying conditions FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE.......and that I had already been dealing with that pain for YEARS by that time, and that I DID have issues walking AND had all kinds of restrictions on my abilities that prior to getting hurt I did not have, ie no lifting ANYTHING over 25lbs, no bending, no twisting, no climbing, no prolonged periods of sitting, no prolonged periods of standing, just to name a few. Her response......NOPE.........and because of her responses which I never did get to read before she sent the paperwork in, the CRA DENIED my application for the CRA disability tax credit, but they did tell me I could apply for it again at a later date, but I had to wait at least a year before I did so. So if you're considering applying for the CRA Disability Tax Credit, make damn sure your doctor is on the same page with you. IF they aren't they can sabotage your eligibility according to the CRA standards. That's what my doctor at the time did to me.

Needless to say, the minute she put HER reputation and ability to practice medicine over MY health and well-being, and did not seem to understand what SEVERE AND LONG TERM meant, that was the minute I fired her ass. Why did she do it? Because she was upset with me for seeing a chiropractor before I saw her when I first got hurt. She's one of the doctor's out there who doesn't believe in chiropractic or other "alternatives" to what she was taught in medical school to be a GP. She wanted to push pills down my throat that I couldn't afford and not deal with the underlying conditions in any way. I reminded her while pain sucks, it also lets us know there's a problem, a problem that simply "masking" it doesn't address. She didn't wanna hear it OR consider what we could do to remedy the underlying conditions (surgery, which as I've said although she wanted nothing to do with it, my current doctor has NEVER taken off the table, but IF they do it, they only wanna do it once. ) So as I said, I FIRED HER ASS and found my current doctor who is willing to work with me, instead of against me. Eventually I'll likely ask her to fill out the CRA paperwork, and possibly the paperwork for a parking permit as well, something else the fired doctor refused to consider.

Been there did that. Fired my last Doctor from south Africa because we argued over who knows drugs better. A gp or a pharmacist. He said he does and I said my niece does as she is a licensed Pharmacist. He then had his nurse send me a letter telling me I had 90 days to find a new GP. I do have a disability for the CRA that I have had for over 10 years.
