Off Topic Cheating in a tournament

Probably a lot more cheating than you would think. Same with the use of fish cages/pens in bass tournaments.

We had a well-known Lake Erie charter boat Captain do this a few years ago in a Lake Ontario derby. He added a one-pound weight to the fish's belly. Reason "To impress his wife" I'm sure she was impressed when he was charged with theft under $5000 and ruined the business. So, it does happen.
It has made my Twitter feed, I guess it's prime for fish jokes.

Must be quite a drug to destroy one's reputation and existence.

Don't know why, but this brought to mind some TV show hosts' lack of better judgement as well.

I can't say I ever seen a lead weight being fed to a walleye....I'm curious exactly how they do this? How are they shoving fish fillets down another fish gullet? Serious question. Obviously the fish are dead first right ?

Just had this conversation with a buddy of mine who's a bait builder and ex charter captain along with a bass tournament fisherman I know, our only thoughts are with a stick or rod to push them through. Definitely a very ignorant and disrespectful act for sure and we hope they pay for it which I'm sure they will and I really hope they do on top of their reputation already being ruined. Funny what money does to some people but this is just disgusting

If this is not their first such act and they still have sponsors, it looks like there isn't really an aversion at the sponsor end of the equation. I am thinking that a tournament "shit list" needs to be up and running to ban the likes of these scumbags from entering any future events for life. "Leopards never change their spots." - as they say. "Fool me once; shame on you. Fool me twice; shame on me." - also comes to mind.😡😡😡😡😡😡

The bizarre thing here is that none of those fish individually appear to be an 8 pounder, in my limited experience from just looking at them and from my more extensive math experience, 4 X less than 8 does not equal 33+ pounds. No wonder there were suspicions. They not only got cheaters, they got 💩Heads. I only saw one of the team members sticking around to face the music - apparently another cliche is in order... "There's no honour among thieves"🤥

I'm certain there will be consequences, and probably severe as well. This is a time to let cooler heads prevail, if not, it becomes vengeance not justice.

Yeah thinking the same . Wooden dowel maybe . What's the purpose of the fish fillets beside adding weight? Does this help hide the lead ? Just trying to wrap my head around these 2 meat heads out on the lake shoving lead balls and fillets down with a wooden dowel....what a sight

..

I hope they are charged with theft over $5000
And if they actually won over $300k in a few years worth of tournaments I hope they get much worse. 😉

From veal farm background, we had a tool to insert large pills and meds into calves' stomachs, or at least deep past throats, so they couldn't spit them out. About 15" long, by 1/4" diameter plastic tube, with a long narrow plunger down shaft to push pill out of a much wider socket at the end. Some pills were quite large, 1" x 1/2" diameter. Over many years of hearing about cheats adding weights to fish at tourneys, I always figured they used something like these "pill plungers", as our vet used to call them. Perfect for inserting lead weights.

looks like the organizers turned on the fan and (sh) its gonna hit

Fischer said tournament officials are in touch with local authorities.

Stephanie O’Grady, media and outreach specialist at the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, told CNN the department collected evidence Friday and is preparing a report for the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office.

“As this is an open investigation, we have no further comment at this time,” she wrote in an email to CNN."

given the size of the potential winnings, a variety of criminal charges could potentially be laid. With their names all over the national news networks, I suspect the notices similar to @RyTek Marine 's will be pouring in quite quickly.

From what I read the fillets were put in between the weights so they wouldn't make noise clinking together inside the stomach

Not that is makes a huge difference but they actually weighed in 5 fish totalling just over 33 lbs including the 8 lbs of stuff inside (so average fish was 6.6 lbs including ballast, 5 lbs without). Stupid part is, they would have won handily even without adding weight, the second place team only had 16lbs or so.

Agreed about the comment about weights clinking (although lead is fairly quiet) and probably it’s also about having the right density and not looking all lumpy.

It’s the same as the comment about “those don’t look like 8 pounders”… they don’t have the right size and proportions to weigh that much because a 10 pound fish fills your cooler but a 10 pound lead cannonball is the size of your fist.

I honestly don’t even think a live weight tournament would stop that behaviour, only change it into some kinda force feeding BS or get more crafty to add weight to not (immediately) kill the fish. I can recall reading the problems in salmon derbies since I was a teen.
