Well i was lucky enough to be the first fishing boat to fish Marina Cayo Santa María with Juan Manuel Almeida as our guide . We fished 3 days and it didnt dissapoint. This is definetly my favourite cuba destination to fish .
Day one was a little slow after the full moon and partial eclipse this will always mess with everything fishing from tides to just a weird time. And not after fishing for 18 months it always takes time to dial in the fish and techniques again, we all get rusty!!!! Dont get me wrong 10 snapper a nice barracuda and a baby tarpon is a great day . I just know what cayo santa maria can produce .
Day 2 started off with a bang that never stopped, we boated 28 snapper and probaly dropped another 15 fish was non stop all day and lots of othe doecies including a deep water bonefish on the jig , we were on them real good and all cylinders were firing just like santa maria can . The tarpon had there jaws locked up and not coperating, just rolling and sticking there tongues out at us . Definetly a arm breaker of a day all in all .
Day 3 we were concentrating in snook and tarpon . The snook were there but no coperating and the tarpon were rolling but again sticking there tongues out at us again. We had 6 good snapper in yhe box , when i hooked a good fish , while fighting it my reel stem snapped, NOTE dont bring cheap plastic stem fresh water reels. See picture!!!! And nothing less than a 4000 series and 20 lb braid with 60 lb fluro leader . The tide changed and we moved away from the bridges in the bay and found a huge school of tarpon and it was onlike donkey kong !!!! We went 2-6 on the tarpon and had at least 20 short hits and tarpon rolling and flashing on our jig baits. 100s of tarpon around the boat . Best 2 hours of tarpon fishing ive ever had . Was a great finnish to the week in cuba. I love fishing cuba and cant wait to get back in march for the big girls . Thanks juan manuel alamieda
