I would not recommend renting a car - go with a tour company. Apparently, those cops on the highway are looking for bribes more than criminals.

I was staying south of Playa del Carmen and the charter was well north, back near the airport.

The crew was great. We emailed back and forth a few times before I left and we discussed what was good for that time of year. We ended up choosing reef fishing as the deep sea fishing was cold at that time. The trip was great and we caught a few really wired looking fish including an eel. Gear, bait and drinks all included. When you're done there's a nice restaurant at the beach where you get dropped off.

Believe it or not there ice fishing is worse than ours this year!! I think it has to do with chipping the ice away from the lakes to use them in those darn tasty libations!

Try fishing with Ivan out of playa del carmen. They were great when we went with them. Caught a huge Mahi Mahi and they do a private snorkeling tour for turtles if your with the wife or kids. I know Amberjack is excellent fishing right now down there, his website has a chart showing what species is hottest per month. They will also cook your catch for you well you sip on some coronas on the beach!

Thanks for the info.
But I'll tell you I was sitting in my yard today with shorts and no shirt pre tanning it just seems so much better to go south when it is freezing here. LOL
