Adblock message?

Stomp, I know in the past couple of weeks there have been some threads about the ads. You mentioned that the ads pay for the site and I get that. This morning. While trying to access this site( which I really enjoy) , I got a message that says, your attention is required, please turn off your adblocker. The laptop which I tried to access the forum on is a work laptop and I have no control over adblocker. And I cannot make any changes to the security of this device. It essentially freezes me or blocks me out of the site, because there is no option to hit "ok" or anything. I can still access from my phone. Which is how I am posting this, but my question is are you going to keep blocking the site from devices that don't allow ads? Thanks in advance.

I got this also on Tuesday night when I got home from work. Annoyed me (a little bit only and possibly because it was 0230 on a hot sticky frustrating night) that it says "Please consider...." then doesn't allow any other choice but quit or have ads for light bulbs and a flatter stomach show up on peoples posts . Have always supported the site sponsors and contributed to the discussion when I can as well by providing free content. Feels a little like someone invading my privacy by blocking my ability to run my preferences on my computer. Have bucked this since I was a kid - for example I pay a few pennies a day for Sirius rather than have to put up with the constant nattering of radio ads and the computer is (to me) a good substitute for TV because I can eliminate the commercialism. My two cents.

I think what most people fail to see is that as Stomp mentioned before the ads you block are paying for the site. If everyone blocks them we won't have a site to browse anymore. If people feel the need to block unnecessary ads maybe they should start paying a membership fee? I don't think we have much to complain about here.

Using Sirius satellite as an example is something you pay monthly to not have the ads.

I'm not complaining about the ads, I am just saying that on my laptop, it is owned by my company, I have no control over being able to block or allow the ads. ( our global IT sets the security and I do not have access to change the settings , I have tried!!!) I would like to continue to be able to view this site on my laptop as it is more convenient than using my small phone. I understand the ads pay for the site, and I am fine with the ads. I just wish the site wasn't blocked to devises that block the ads, because I have no control over that. That's all my point or question was. I can still acces the site on my mobile devise , because that is how I am posting this, but the laptop is much nicer when I'm not on the water.

pay for the site? what is being paid for? when the site started, was there a cost factor? does this site generate an
income?

We can kill this thread, it was not intended to stir up shit. It really was only a question. Thanks

F4F, get your own PC, and block or un-block all you like??
Easy answer,
Work computer is for work,
PC, personal computer, you can do as you wish.
Solved another one
Good Day

I have the same problem with not being able to view site , what changed in the last little while ? I rather pay membership then have ads !

@can't miss Wow, thanks for pointing out the blatantly obvious ....... Your a regular Sherlock Holmes. I do remember saying kill this thread. But thanks for that. ;):p. ..... Please kill this thread. It is only causing shit, and it was not intended to do so. Thanks and sorry.....

Your absolutely right, you did say kill it, and I couldn't bite my tongue, I apologize. When someone open's and closes a thread, that should be it, or it becomes just a bitch and pick site, again, my bad. Good fishing bud

Ok now it looks the mobile site is back to normal and my avatar is correct or maybe it's my flipping phone
Alls good

Some interesting discussion here! Some related points from my perspective:
  • I didn't mean to piss anyone off. The message shown when an adblocker is detected is an out-of-the-box message that came with some software I purchased. I'll make it more appropriate when time permits.
  • I wasn't giving a lot of thought to ad blocking until a recent post included instructions on how to block ads (Of note was that the instructions came from an individual that has primarily used the Classified Section of the site to sell his stuff without, in return, supplying any fishing reports for years). When I researched this topic, I found that ad blocking is a big issue for many sites, like this one, that rely on advertising as a source of income.
  • I make money on this site, but not enough to buy an offshore boat. I do make enough so that when a member asks me to go fishing, I can pay them what I hope is more than a fair amount for my day. It's a hobby that helps fund my other fishing hobby.
  • Running the site has hard costs like server rental, domain name registration and buying software. It has other costs too, mostly involving my time. Mrs. Stomp has been putting up with me spending hours hunched over the keyboard or on the water and, after 18 years of it, I think she's pretty much fed up now - so this soft cost may soon evolve into a hard cost:inpain::banghead:;))
I thank the sponsors and all that do contribute content here. I thank everyone that puts up with looking at the ads. The ads pay the site bills, fund my fishing exploits and give me the justification to spend the time to keep the site running. Peace!

I am more than happy to pay a reasonable fee to use this site as I do daily. It keeps me abreast of the goings on in our lake as well I have learned more about longline trolling that I ever knew prior to joining. I still don't know the relavence of the questions asked by @soobybucker. My response was not related to your questions @fish4fun. It was for @soobybucker that has contributed no less than 4 times here. Someone said work PC is for work home computer is for entertainment. I have heard of many employees being disciplined up to and including dismissal for doing exactly what you are doing. Be careful, big brother is watching.
