LONG POINT WATERFOWLERS’ ASSOCIATION
FIFTH ANNUAL SPECIAL YOUTH HUNT ANNOUNCEMENT
In an effort to expose young people to the beautiful marshlands of Long Point and to introduce them to the great tradition of waterfowl hunting the Long Point Waterfowlers’ Association are organizing our second special Youth Hunt Apprentice Day. Many will have seen the episode of the Angler and Hunter TV which featured a past event.
On the Saturday 1st, October 2011(expected second Saturday of Season) we will host a group of 20 youth and apprentice hunters to a very special experience. The day will include instruction in and demonstrations of firearms safety, waterfowl identification, decoy carving and setting techniques, duck and goose calling, retriever demonstrations, waterfowl processing and cooking and much more. Lunch including a waterfowl course will also be provided.
We are also inviting presentations from conservation groups like the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, Ducks Unlimited Canada, Delta Waterfowl and The Long Point Waterfowl and Wetlands Research Fund.
The highlight of the day will be after lunch. Through the support of the Long Point Waterfowl Unit we have arranged the use of 20 of the waterfowl unit blinds to allow the young hunters to experience a half day duck hunt.
The day is open to apprentice and young hunters 16 years of age and younger. They must provide proof of either an Ontario Small Game license or Apprentice Hunter Card with their application. The day of the event they must also produce a valid 2010 Migratory Bird Permit. They must be accompanied by a parent, or parent approved guardian. This adult can also serve as their designated Mentor on the hunt. The mentor will also be expected to produce a valid Small Game License and Migratory Bird Permit the day of the event in accordance with Federal and Provincial legislation. If the help of an experienced hunter to accompany the youth and guardian is requested the LPWA will provide one. The day is open to boys and girls and special arrangements can be made for physically challenged hunters.
Applications will be accepted on a first come first serve basis. However, we will be giving preference to Youth’s who did not take part in last year’s event. The day is free of charge however a fifteen dollar application fee is required but will be refunded the day of the event.
