Off Topic RANT......And I thought MY dental work was expensive.

😥I couldn't make it to the youth event in Aylmer this past weekend due to some dental work I had done that drained my finances until I get paid later this week.

Until today I thought MY dental work when it's all done was expensive. (I still have a couple more things to get taken care of before it's all done.) But not so much anymore.

I just took our kitty to the vet because half her face started swelling on Wednesday night and the soonest they could get her in was today. Well, she has an abscessed tooth due to a rotted root, and that tooth will eventually have to be pulled once the infection causing the abscess has been controlled and the swelling reduced.

I couldn't believe it when the bill for today for the exam and 2 prescriptions plus the quote they gave me came up to be MORE than all my dental work combined after I'd just explained to them how much my dental work, dental work that's been put off for far too long, was going to cost us o_Oo_O.

I guess the vet forgot we've told them for several years now, we can't do everything they suggest and would want us to do because.............WE AREN'T MADE OUT OF MONEY!!!!!

Rant over. :)

2k up front for a root canal Wednesday! Money up front and no guarantee it will work. Weee ain't being old great?

I hear ya. I'd love to say that the quote for the cat to have ONE tooth pulled was that "inexpensive" but...........it ain't.:( It's going to cost almost $1000 more than what I'm paying for my dental work to pull that one tooth out of the cat's mouth and I can't get the rest of what I need done until at least May because I have to save up the money I'll need to get the rest of it done and it'll be at least that long before I have it.

How's $10,000.00 for a single post and tooth?

Eating corn on the cob is very tedious to get all the kernels.

The Wife and I are discussing a pup but there is a lot for us to consider cost wise. 🤪 🌻

My mother in law got implants, cost her the price of a small car.......and they didn't last. She's back to using her partial.

When my front teeth got knocked out 33+ years ago when I was breaking up a fight in the restaurant I worked at in Yellowknife during the "bar rush" after the bars closed, it was going to cost me $2500 per tooth and that was before anything like is available today. (ie implants)

My wife just called me after reading the message I sent her about what the vet said, the quote etc and she's NOT happy. She questions, as do I, why it will cost more to pull one tooth out of the cat's mouth than it will cost me to have all that I'm having done dentally. There's a charge in the quote for $755 for "feline dentistry" but no breakdown of what that entails. We think it's a cash grab. We've decided we're going to go see the vet on Friday when she's off and have a little sit down and discussion about this quote and find out exactly what they're intending to do OTHER than just what's necessary to pull that damn tooth and remind them again.......we aren't made out of money. We want to know why it will cost more to pull one tooth out of the cat's mouth than it will cost us for ALL the dental work I'm having done.. Something don't smell right.

Well following my motorcycle accident in Edmonton on July 12th 2014 I had to get a full upper dental implants. Thank god the insurance paid for it. $23,700.00

That's about what my MIL paid and now she's back to using her partial because the implants failed. (dunno why or how, not sure I wanna know. lol)

All implants (except fun bags) carry no warranty or guarantee.

Implants need bone to install and survive.

Also, smokers have extremely high failure rates and many specialists refuse to service smokers now. 🌻

She doesn't smoke. Not sure why they failed. She never told us, we never asked lol

I feel your pain Trevor M ; 20 plus years ago it cost me 1800 bucks to have a tooth crowned on one of my Labs and now just got finished getting my new dog fixed..... 700 bucks later ! Soon he will need his other shots and heartworm meds probably another 400 dollar visit at the least. So okay, prices are up everywhere and worst of all a lot of vet clinics are owned by heartless corporations out to squeeze every penny out of pet owners by tugging on their heartstrings. Last Fall it was over 200 bucks to put my old girl down ! With pet ownership comes the responsibility of their upkeep and care but there comes a point where it isn't cost effective for you or quality of life for them and a decision must be made and that really sucks !

Don't get me started about dentists ! Once they know you have a dental plan they milk that cash cow dry ! I can't fathom how many of their kids I put through university ? LoL !

Look up Beattie animal hospital. They have various locations in southern Ontario. Burlington clinic is great and has saved us and friends of ours a lot of money compared to some vets which hose you big time.

I've switched vets a number of times over the years as they "evolve" their practices. (petless now)

When you take your companion in for something simple and they spout a list of must do tests and blood work before they'll do anything every visit, get a new vet.

I've told more than one vet, this is an animal, not a child.

My last dog had a multi thousand ($4k) dollar surgery on a back leg at 6 and she lived to 13 1/2 so don't think I dispense of animals willy nilly. 🌻

Out west I had two dogs. Both border collies. The first one got hit by a car when my ex's daughter decided to take her out to the van when we were going out WITHOUT using the leash. She took off on her and ran into the middle of the intersection and got hit. Broken leg, broken tail. Tail would have to be bobbed. Vet wanted $3500 right now or he wasn't gonna touch her any further. We didn't have $3500, and I couldn't borrow it from anyone, so the decision was made.

Heartless bastard had the balls to look at me, tears running down my face........tears running down the faces of my ex and two of the three kids who were with us when we took her and say, "IF you want to be in the room with her, it'll be $250. If you don't, there's no charge."

I'm not a violent man and learned a long time ago how to control my temper........but that day it took my ex, the two kids and the nice lady vet tech to hold me back and even then it was a struggle for them to do it....... I WAS going over the counter at the son of a bitch. They got me out of there as he cowered in a corner.

When it comes to dentists, generally, don't like'em. But this new one I have now, I don't mind him at all. He's working with me, and understands I don't have a hell of a lot of money.Told me today if the lab charges more than he's quoted me, he'll knock that amount off his fees to get this work done.

A few years ago my little pomeranian was having trouble eating and needed dental work. I was charged over 2K for cleaning and tooth removal. When I was leaving the office he mentioned almost nonchalantly that he noticed a growth and he did a biopsy and he'd let me know the results. I looked in her mouth when I got home and it was obviously a large cancerous growth and of course he called the next day to confirm this. There was no reason for him to do the dental work as she had to be put down immediately. Pure money grab

We've been telling this vet for 5 years that I'm on a very low set income and that we aren't made out of money. IF we feel she needs to be seen, we'll make that appointment, otherwise, we'll bring her in once a year to have her blood work done to ensure the thyroid med she's been on is doing it's job, or can be tweaked. (which just happened last month.) We were told 5 years ago when she was first put on the thyroid meds, the best they could "guarantee" was maybe 5 more years of life. After that, every day would be a bonus. So now she has a major tooth abscess, and true to OUR word, because we knew she had to be seen, we took her in. Got the meds she needs to address this issue. My wife and I are going to go pay them a visit on Friday and get them to break down this damn quote and explain to us WHY pulling one tooth is going to cost over $1800 more than all the dental work I've had done over the past month or will have done over the next month or so which has been and is going to be far more substantial than pulling a tooth that needs to be pulled. We want to know what part of WE AREN'T MADE OUT OF MONEY they keep forgetting. We're going to tell them........when the infection has been adequately treated, PULL the tooth, NOTHING MORE............we understand there will be certain fees to go with that...ie anesthetic, IV during the surgery, and post surgical medications etc but they've quoted "feline dentistry" but don't say what that entails, presurgery bloodwork she JUST had her bloodwork done and the vet mentioned it during the exam yesterday so why it would need to be done again so soon just to pull a tooth, no idea, Then there's a fee for "dental recheck" Ummmmmmm wtf is that all about? How many times they gotta look to tell us what they've already told us, which we've already repeatedly told them.....anything over and above the absolutely necessary because it's emergent in nature, ie pulling this damn tooth once the infection has resolved........ WE CAN'T AFFORD..........They better answer us satisfactorily or we may start looking for another vet who won't keep trying to bleed us dry financially by doing things THEY want to do, knowing WE can't afford to do it.

You need to find a country vet. My English bulldog ate a corn cob and lodged. Horrible situation. Horrible

Took her to emergency vets and regular vets in Milton. Highest quote was $5600 for the surgery. They said “try Guelph university” and the vet program ($4000).

Local horseman told me to go outside of town and go to the Brookville vet. (cattle, horse, farm animal vet and pets).

He looked at the X-rays from day prior and said “I have only tried this on a Cadaver dog” and I asked “did it pull through??” And he laughed like I have never seen laughter done before.

End of the day, recovery medication included, $980 bucks.

I will NEVER EVER go to a local vet-mill again. OH!!!!!!!! And she had a broken tooth removed……… for free. (Minus meds)

I have a hatred for city vets after that … massive hatred.

“Lardass” lived many years after that..
