Off Topic Water levels backing off the record highs

For those of us that remember the mid 80's we used to come back in from fishing and the K-car my buddy drove had water on the floor more than a few times. We parked and launched at the public old cut spot in those days. My wife and I had a camper van and woke up more than a few times surrounded by water at the new park. The old guys used to tell us stories and the high water days in their youth.
Or launching my boat from the parking lot at the provincial park in 2019.

At least having a lifted jeep I pretty much had the launch to myself. Normal vehicles weren't getting in and out of there without getting swamped.

Looks like Long Point was or is a good storm away from old cut becoming new cut. The point was an island back in the 1800s.

Check out the "Maritime History of the Great Lakes" website. There are at least 3 very interesting charts done by the British Admiralty. There is a 1818 chart done by Bayfield RN done before the first Cut aka "Old Cut" happened and the second shows a New Cut both done by Harris RN 1839 and 1863 respectively. Long Point has no doubt suffered many Cuts throughout it's history and as we know history has a way of repeating itself.

Some scientists like to think Mother Nature works on a 100 cycle but she has her own agenda...always has...always will.

I think the 100-year thing is just a tool to assess the risk of an event happening, it helps people put things into perspective.
I certainly hope they don't think there is a 100-year cycle… that would be asinine.

This was my area of study a long time ago... so i still follow it. Even worked as a high school student for fisheries and oceans on great lakes management when the remedial action plan started in the late 80s (why the water is much cleaner now). The 100-year thing is a risk management tool. Just speaks to the frequency potential relative to 'normal.' They haven't had measurement tools long enough to see patterns besides the one you can sorta see on the water levels.

Historical accounts are wild but things like the little ice age make it all hard to relate to today: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Ice_Age -- so the 1800s water levels where on the tail end of a long cooling pattern. Probably why settlers stayed south, etc. Also when you clear trees for farmland the rivers change, etc.

Solar activity influences a lot of stuff -- the number of humans doing stuff also influences a lot. It's asinine that politicians whip up positions and make it a battle. It's all opportunity in my mind.

Heh the parking lot was calmer when I was there. Looks a little choppy in your photos.
Yes it was @Wildfire a little choppy indeed that day when I was there!! The main channel going out from the boat ramp to the inner bay was also “Choked” with weeds!! F5ECE5CE-E6F2-412C-A632-0B5F6168E55B.jpeg due to the lack of no one using the boat ramp and the main boat channel, which gave the weeds a chance to grow & thicken up!! Come on to the Boating/Fishing season,2021 B6BF697E-7FFB-4076-9E7E-11BE8B9988CD.jpeg E2A8877D-DE56-4256-9D24-B51DF14429D2.jpeg & tight lines and Be Safe 😷 to All!! 🚤🎣🐟👍🙂
