Shish kebabs

We wanted some bbq. The airbnb we rented claimed to have one. Arrived to find a rusting lawn ordiment.... We had already purchased all the necessary ingredients and had our hearts set on shish kebabs. So off to a local big box store and purchased a charcoal grill and some charcoal. $43.00 later we were firing her up and preparing dinner.

The kebabs and potatoes turned out perfect! Marinated the beef for a few hours in a balsamic dressing with a few spices added. Seasoned peppers and mushrooms. Buttered and salted the potatoe skin.

I was shocked that such a small grill could produce such amazing results. I was worried it would be too hot but not the case. Steaks tonight!

We were trying to get a return on our $43.00 investment before we left our airbnb today. As the grill would not travel well on an airplane.

Steaks on Monday, hamburger and dogs the next day. Everything that went on this grill came off tasting amazing. The cook was perfect every time.

The lady that ran the airbnb noticed our grill in the yard. She apologized for the inaccurate listing and informed us that in 3 years of running her air bnb, nobody had used the bbq. She had given it away to a friend. She asked if we would be ok with leaving behind our little grill when we left and reimbursed us for the cost. Great lady, and a fantastic place to stay if your ever in newark NJ.

I remember buying a $30 BBQ and a bag of charcoal many years ago because I couldn't do without one while I waited to get a gas hook up installed in our newly purchased house.

I'm sorry, but I can't help laughing and here's why.

A few months ago, I was on my way to pick my wife up from work. Out in front of his place was the property management's son. He was BBQing. I asked him what was for supper. He has an incredibly high squeaky voice, and said in response, "shish kabobs" I said, "oh, ok."

I guess he forgot that I used to be a chef, and assumed I didn't have a clue what he was talking about, because he looked at me like I hadn't understood him, used his tongs, picked one up off the grill to show me and said, in that same very high, squeaky voice of his, "CHICKEN ON A STICK!!!" I lost it.
