Albert (Intrepid) and John (Canvasback) joined me this morning to attempt catching a few Small Mouth. We started in 18 fow at Port Ryerse and caught 2 real nice ones immediately but almost 3 hours later we were still at 2 and decided to admit defeat and head for home. The weather was perfect and we marked lots of fish and bait but not many would cooperate. We also tried Normandale where Albert last got into them about a week ago and still nothing. Personally, I'm giving up on bass for this season. My experience in 2014 was either feast or famine. Some days they were suicidal and others they were really tough. Today was the toughest.

I was out there too....but came up with nothing. :( Started at Normandale...back to TP, different depths, live bait and rubber...no bass to be found.
I agree, Duck....was a beautiful day to be out....and there were many boaters out there today.....just disappointed in the fishing.
Ah well, time to get ready to get back to work ....September/October perch is still to come. :)
Cheers!
Ken

Other then opener really haven't fished the river for smallies---been busy chasing perch around. There is sept/oct to give them a go when they put on the feed bag.:D

At least you gave it a good try Arnie:)

It was a tough day all around. DWP didn't want too cooperate real well either. Good try Arnie

Well Arnie, I would have traded places with you today in a heart beat. " A bad day fishing is way better than a day at work". Must have been a beauty of a morning.

I was out today trying for Largies in the Inner Bay and it too was tough. Water temps were down 10 degrees from last week. It was 66F out there today. Part of the reason I had a slow day. Blue bird skies, light breeze and high pressure never means good things for Largies.

Hmmmm i have to disagree there spilliard, was out last night for a few hours and nailed the bucketmouths. 12 between two of us and the second and third biggest largmouth all year. one 21'' ( 6lbs) and one 20 1/2'' ( 5 lbs) . They were tucked in shallow and tight to cover but were super aggressive. 11 of 12 nailed on a frog type lure.

Nice sounds like a good night. Let's see some pics of those fish. 2nd and 3rd biggest for the year at 5-6lbs.? Like to see the biggest if over 6? I fish for largies a bunch and have only landed 2 over 5 in my lifetime. Should have some pics of fish that big no? .....

Here you go , this was the smaller one. other pic did not turn out well. Need to invest in a better camera one of these days. 20 1/2'' . Eating very well. These big boys are up very shallow, maybe you guys are fishing to deep?IMG_20140608_194432.jpg

Nice fish basswright, last week I found both the largemouth and smallmouth had moved shallower, I think it was because of the water temperature drop. Chris.

All the bass came from 3 to 4 feet of water. Tucked in tight to cover or shore. The big boys and girls are starting to put the feed bag on now.

At 20.5 inches and that thick, I think a very low 4 is fair. Maybe she had a bellyful, but unless I saw it on a scale, that is no 5lber.
I have not seen or heard, rec or tourney, of a LM over 6 coming out of the bay in long, long time. Over 5 is very rare, with usually a high four or two coming in on the tourney's I have fished down there.

Hmmm last time I checked a 20.5" bass was a hair over 5 lbs! A 21 would be 6.
I have multiple pictures of a friend who bagged a nearly 24" fish that went almost 7. She was big and healthy, in season and not full of spawn. This of course was not in the bay.

Check out the multiple bass length to weight charts all over the net. I think you will see the difference. I have caught multiple largemouth from the bay that size and bigger. It's common knowledge a 19" bass is about 4 lbs give or take depending on girth. I'd post the chart but not sure how.
