Off Topic Outboard motor repair, London/St. Thomas area

I have a Chaparral Tri-Hull Bow rider with 1973, 65 HP Johnson, that I bought used over 30 years ago. I have always done all my own maintenance and repairs, the basic stuff, plugs, water pump, lower end oil, new starter, rebuilt the carburetors and so on.

It has never failed to start and run once, but this year I am having trouble with the Spark advance timing base sticking. It is under the fly-wheel, I suspect the grease has dried up, causing it to stick.

Rather than me pulling it apart, I want to take into a shop, and have them do it and set the timing, and do link and sync. (this has never been done in the 30 years I have had it)

I have been thinking of trying Stauder's Outboard Solutions in St .Thomas, but I don’t know if they are any good.
Does anyone know of good outboard repair shop in the London/St. Thomas area?

Thanks, Mike.

You might need to find an old timer or small engine maxhanic
My guess is will need to pull the fly wheel and clean up the points ????

Not sure how many new generation marine mechanics will have experience with pre 1980 motors. ?

There used to be a marine service guy near shallow lake that specialized in pre 1990 motors

Not sure if still around or how to find him ?

You could try Doug Claus. He has a shop 2 miles East of Copenhagen, just south of Nova Scotio Line at 4966 Pede Road. His number is 519-773-3274. Highly recommended.

The 1973 has electronic ignition (the 72 and earlier had points)
Looks like I will give Doug Claus a call.

Thanks for all the help everyone, I think will give Doug Claus a call and see what he says.

Spring is upon us, everyone will soon be very busy.

The guy's name is Frank Sauder and has 20+ years experience on out boards, repair, rebuilding and service. Spoke to him on a few occasions and seems very knowledgeable and accommodating. He is located at 220 Edward St., St. Thomas. unit 9. Right at the corner ( Edward/Sparling) in the same building Stump'sRus is. The entrance is around the back, north end of building. Sign on the door. 519-318-5162
Hope this information helps.
cheers!
Mike

No worries. I am 58 and I already know the feeling. I just repowered my 23-foot Hydro sport and sold Frank my old piece of Evinrude !@#$%^. He was awesome to deal with. I haven't had him do any work for me as of yet. I will be giving him a shot in the future though.
