When using a planer board mast, to get the planer boards out as far as possible is a short line off the mast better, or a long line?
I ask because I noticed when retrieving the planer boards the shorter the line got, the angle away from the boat the planner boards increased.
 
What Salty said> but you want them as far away from boat as possible. Dont think it really matters if they lag the boat some after all it is to keep lines away from the boat spooking fish.
 
All I have to say is a good set of hard pulling boards make a world of difference. I have owned boards that worked the exact opposite the faster I went the more they lagged behind.
 
LiNE length is only dependant on wave height. The further away from boat the better. Not so long that the line drags in the water. The design of the board will change how it pulls.
 
just remember theres a lot of boats out there somedays you don't need to take up the hole lake with them seen and heard a lot of yelling out there somedays lol
