I don' the think you need a boating licence to rent. Call Old Cut to make sure.
Last year we rented a 42 ft. house boat and did not require a licence. 20 min. Video about boating, 20 min. lesson on reading charts and 20 min. on the boat instructions and see you later.

Yes the rental company can sign you off with basically a temporary boaters card(renters checklist) for the rental of their boat.

...bigbus has a great idea..rather than a charter, rent a boat for 4 hours...probably your cheapest alternative...I don't mind someone coming out with me. I love the company and never go out alone, but a whole family......that many people results in tangled lines etc. Not sure if you need a boat operator's card if you rent a boat ..but everyone definitely would need a fishing license..with a charter I don't know

Yes, I was renting smaller boats before - they will give you instructions how to start the motor etc and will never ask for license!
When I asked them they said rental agreement IS a temporary license.

Most people who cant afford a charter usually go on here and post that they are willing to pay for gas if someone will take them out. Also people on here post they have am open seat available and are looking for company. Did that once and had a great time.

...I think the problem was that he was looking for something for himself, his mother and brothers.....an open seat is great if you are by yourself, but for a group, not so much...the boat rental is his best option IMHO..
