Given the lack of ice in Southern Ontario, we decided to load up and head North. We spent a couple of days visiting friends in Marten River at Beaverland Camp. It was lots of fun and we managed to squeeze in a part day of ice fishing on Marten Lake between the Junior games and New Years eve. There is very little snow and the ice is just getting thick enough to fish if you are careful where you go (5-7" where we were). We got a couple of walleye which was a bonus.
New Years morning we headed to Callander for opening day on Nipissing. Surprisingly, there weren't too many people out. The ice on the bay was still only 5-8" where we checked with slush and a couple of inches of snow on top. Travelling was difficult with the ATV due to the slush but we made it out to the channel and set up. We picked away at the walleye all day and ended up with our two man limit and a bunch of smaller ones which went back for future reference. It rained and snowed off and on all afternoon and everything we owned was drenched and frozen by the time we got back.
Not sure what's next but we may head to Sudbury to visit some friends and chase some lakers...
