No hats for hides this year

Yes I heard that a while back, and that means no hide drop off points, which means thousands of deer and moose hides left in the bush or thrown along rural side roads.

Some tanneries will take hides in exchange for a pair of wool socks .....my dad takes all our hides to a tannery in Blyth

It seems very few people bother taking in hides anymore so it’s not really going to be much different than a normal season.

Anyone have some numbers comparing deer harvested to hides turned in?

It has been a long slow death for this program.

The intention was to supply First Nation artisans, but the supply was way over and above demand, so they all got shipped to China. I'd like for the hides to get used, but it doesn't make sense to do so at the taxpayer's expense.

As for the roadside drop-off concern, I'd say that bones are an equal concern, and there was never a program to get rid of them.

I’m a relatively new hunter, all I know is the people I hunt with enjoyed collecting the hats and badges. It’s too bad in our eyes, looking into other places that will trade socks or whatever for hides as mentioned above thanks!

My butcher skins our deer right at his shop. Took our deer there and he gave us the hats and badges for 2020.
