Only one party will kill it: Hoeppner

If you want to get rid of the federal Long-Gun Registry, elect Conservatives on May 2, says the MP who introduced the unsuccessful private member's bill to kill the registry.
"This is an adult job," Candice Hoeppner who represents the riding of Portage-Lisgar in Manitoba, told a rally Tuesday outside Ramakko's Source for Adventure on Regent Street. "This is a job for people willing to take a stand. If you don't have what it takes to do the job, you shouldn't be running as a member of Parliament."
The comment was a shot at the two local New Democrat incumbents -- Glenn Thibeault and Claude Gravelle -- who were initially in favour of killing the federal registry, but changed their minds. Their votes helped keep the registry when a vote was held in Parliament.
More than 40 people attended the rally.
Hoeppner said Northern Ontario voters will remember on May 2 how the two Greater Sudbury MPs and others across the North like Liberal Anthony Rota (North Bay-Timiskaming) worked to keep the Long-Gun Registry in place and vote to turf them out.
"I don't believe a word they say," she said. "The Liberals and NDP have no respect (for voters). They will choose to defend and maintain the Long- Gun registry ...
"There is only one party, one leader, one group of MPs who will commit to abolishing the Long-Gun Registry.
" That is Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Conservative Party."
Thibeault, Gravelle and other NDP MPs said they voted to allow Hoeppner's bill to proceed so MPs could discuss the registry, but couldn't support it during a final vote because the Conservatives wouldn't allow any amendments.
Sudbury Conservative candidate Fred Slade and Nickel Belt Conservative candidate Lynne Reynolds attended the rally.
"Claude Gravelle and Glenn Thibeault broke that (voter) trust when they gave in to pressure from (NDP leader) Jack Layton and big lobbies down south," Fred Slade said.
Slade said gun owners, such as members of the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, have a deep respect for nature and do their best to protect and preserve it for future generations.
He said rural Canadians who need guns to protect their farms and properties or who love hunting, can expect no respect from the Liberals or NDP when it comes to their way of life.
"Only the Conservatives will defend those rights," said Slade. "We need a Conser vative majority in this country. We don't need a reckless coalition. These two ridings bring us two ridings closer to that majority."
A silent protester -- Cathy Orlando -- carried a sign in support of keeping the long-gun registry.
Her sign asked that the registry be kept, but suggested two changes: make it easier for rural people to register and decriminalizing first offences, Orlando said that had been suggested by the New Democrats, but defeated at parliamentary committee hearings in Ottawa.
A local climate activist, Orlando said that while the registry needs improvement, it has helped make Canadian society safer and should not be scrapped.
