It took 45 weeks, but the Ace of Spades has been caught in Hagersville.
Richard Marshall of Nanticoke was the winner of not only the weekly prize, but also the progressive jackpot, for a total of over $2 million.
“I didn’t really believe it until they phoned me from the legion,” said Marshall, who is retired after working for over 45 years in the commercial fishing industry. “I don’t know what to say.”
As for what he’ll be doing with the money, Marshall said, “It’s too early,” to say anything definitive, but he was certainly happy with the news.
Marshall said he started buying tickets a couple of weeks ago; he really appreciated that the money was going to support local not-for-profits.
The fundraiser was a joint effort between the Hagersville Lions Club, which is donating its half of the net proceeds to the Hagersville Food Bank and other local charities, and the Hagersville Rocks committee of the Hagersville and District Chamber of Commerce, which is donating all of its portion to the West Haldimand Hospital and Healthcare Foundation, which supports West Haldimand General Hospital.
The gross total raised for charities is just over $3 million.
