a report not for fishing but disgusting boating behaviors

My experience, and granted...I don't hit all the ports...but a huge handful...Burwell boaters are the worst. I am thankful, I can get out away from the boats as i can cross (with my kayak), the shallow inner bay. BUT, anything close to the nav channel...is a game for these guys who either fly in at Mach 10 throwing a tidal wave downstream...or ramp up while still well in the channel.

And to Tyler0420's point...as big as the water is off the ports we yak attack...boats just seem to think we can't be fishing 'out there' (maybe?)...or that they have right of way over a yak. Had many close encounters either by trolling boats...or running boats.

King Joe Outa Here!
Today bronte was brutal. Did musk invent a self driving boat? Cuz the amount of boats I seen trolling around with no one looking out the front of the boat was unreal.
It???s like the yak will move or I???ll just run him over.

I have no idea what the boats you are dealing with are doing, but running charter I have a screen at the back of the boat with radar overlaid on my chart. You will never see me looking out the front of the boat. I see targets and tracks, I use binoculars to confirm the course of the other vessels. All that said, I still have nagging boats adjusting course towards me, even as I adjust early and significantly to avoid them. You cannot fix stupid. You can plan for it, but even then they will likely surprise you.

It be a sad day when the Coroners Inquest hands out it's finding as to who was right and who was wrong. As for AI ( Artificial Intelligence ) or other electronic or such devices their purpose is to aid the operator but not eliminate him/her. Large planes and ships have all those goodies but the helm is never left unattended.

What I find odd from the OP is both boats were at trolling speed, right ? So there was plenty of time to react and lots of lake to maneuver in, right ? It must have been like watching a slow motion train wreck.

Both of you need to take a power squadron course. You both share responsibility to avoid collision. Auto pilot does not give either boat right of way. At 100 meres you should disengage your course and divert!
It takes two to tango. Sounds like you both are bull headed and think your the only one that matters.
Big lake share the water and share the RESPONSIBILITY of piloting your own vessel.

You assume that the pirate had no auto pilot therefore your privileged?
autopilot is not the point, read the posts again please

The problem is people not the autopilot.

How many people on here have taken their boating course on one of those cheap on-line sources or at a boat show where you pay your $ and they give you the answers for the test and boom...a card shows up in the mail? More than you'd think.

I forget who said it already, a proper Power Squadron course which takes 2 days is the only way to go to know the rules of the water and basic navigation. A clown who used live close to me had a boat and got his boaters card through one of those cheap-ass sites could not even read a chart, had no idea what the symbols meant and had no idea what that thingy the previous owner had on the dash for a red-right-return rule.

Sad. So when we hear of pirates out there like the OP wrote about with no regard for the "alter course" rules on their starboard side, they need to be called out.

On the water, we are very cognizant of our surroundings and the rules but let's face it, like on the 401...many are idiots.

September 1, south part of Port Maitland on lake Erie, my boat was trolling westbound, this "Kingfisher" (known as "pirate boat" in the following) was trolling northbound towards Port Maitland.

My boat was using Terrova Autopilot so the course was pretty straight the speed steady. I need to point out that not until this pirate boat was like 100 meters away did I notice my boat was on the starboard bow side of it, which meant to me the crossing situation in the picture would probably happen. The pirate boat did not make any change to its course before both boats became about 50 meters apart. Never had such a close encounter with other boats on big lakes before, as I always took precautions and actions and all other boaters did the same too.

I steered my boat towards right side a bit and tuned up the trolling speed in an attempt to avoid the party but what appalled me was the pirate boat steered a little to its left instead of right side! Unbelievably the positions of both boats ended up exactly like it is in the picture except that the pirate boat did not steer to the right and straight passed behind my stern just about 30 feet away. My lead core got entangled was being pulled hard so I had to steer the trolling motor to follow the pirate boat and yelled to them to stop the boat, the two pirates on the back side of the boat was reluctantly to get started to solve the problem. The pirate boat was not even stopped completely! Trolling all by myself at the time, I was not even having time to remind myself of taking a video or photo. Just went back near to the pirates and took a picture after I lost my lure on the leadcore. The pirates took out cellphones as well after they saw me taking photos, of course they had my finger in their pics. Need to think about what I should do to prevent this from happening again in future (hope not) and what to do afterwards.
You can't prevent STUPID...

His point is both boats are supposed to do as much as possible to avoid a collision and your post #12 states you were being sloppy and not paying attention. Therefore, even though the other boat didn???t give right of way you???re equally at fault for not adjusting your course. It???s an enormous lake with zero reason for anyone to be within a few hundred meters while trolling.

Chalk it up as a lesson to be more observant on the water and to adjust course much sooner.

the right of way is based on the relative position, regardless autopilot. the starboard side boat has the right of way. in this case, Whale's boat on has right remain course, and other boat need adjust.

however, this rule only applies when both boats are similar in nature. there are other rules, such as small boat always yield to bigger boat as smaller one normally has better mobility. for example, powerboat yield to sailboat.

just add one more thought, if both boats are trolling, then the situation is more tricky. as the below boat on the left side actually not able to yield easily considering the lines behind would remain the original course for certain distance which likely cause line tangled. only rational solution is one of the boats reduce speed or change direction in advance to avoid getting too close.

I've always treated canoes with the right of way regardless of direction, no wake for them too. Yes this should apply to kayaks. Row boat wins right-away over small power craft etc. Sailboats get the right away over power boats based on their propulsion, or lack there of. I have to yield over any sailboat even if they are twice the size of mine based on propulsion.

last year I was out with a group on my charter. I had 2 boats approaching on my front left side autopilot locked on a straight course. Neither of those 2 altered course!! I altered 20 degrees x3 starboard the first boat crossed in front of me by 4o feet maybe the second finally altered right very little and ran over my outside 2 planers on my Port side for me there was no way out as the second boat was so far up the first ones @$$ . Needless to say second boat cut off my line and took some 50 lb braid line. I was able to circle back and recover my board that did come off which still had my leadcore and lure attached. The bonus was seeing the prick with a smoking bottom end back at the ramp. He knows who he is!! I think he had a well deserved butt hurt!! Sometimes they get a proper lesson!! I always assign people to keep an eye for other boats and my head is on a swivel watching for other boats.

I try to fish away from other boats. But as soon as they see you reeling in fish. They are in my way. Grrrr it's a big lake. I'll share it with you. But with my lines in not that easy to turn. Happen to us last time out and my led lines got tangled cause he thought he should turn and so we had to turn.

Glad I'm fishing a ridge because everyone goes the same direction only problem sometimes you get squeezed into the ridge 😱 SNAG CITY😱😀
Glad I make my own harnesses I got lots of signatures on the bottom 😀 😀

I carry one of those airhorns now. It's a habit I picked up kayaking. Works well in my 14' tinny as well. The horn on my 16' spectrum might be about as loud as my bicycle bell, lol.

Love the autopilot my dad has on his lund. They do seem to make for some lazy boaters out there though.

Also good for checking the condition of your wife's heart, if you don't mind having things thrown at you...

Assume that everyone else is both stupid and ignorant enough to be dangerous.

If anyone has trouble remembering, just remember that the person on the RIGHT has the RIGHT of way. Not hard. Same as a 4-way stop, if you arrive at the same time the person on the right goes first. Easy to remember rules, right?? Yet every time you stop at a 4-way stop, some idiot with the right of way is sitting there waving at you to go because they are too stupid to know the rules of the road, reminding you that everyone else is both stupid and ignorant enough to be dangerous.

Okay, rant over.

everyone needs to read rule #2 of the collision regs. ???
a) Nothing in these Rules shall exonerate any vessel, or the owner, master or crew thereof, from the consequences of any neglect to comply with these Rules or of the neglect of any precautions which may be required by the ordinary practice of seamen, or by the special circumstances of the case.

(b) In construing and complying with these Rules due regard shall be had to all dangers of navigation and collision and to any special circumstances, including the limitations of the vessels involved, which may make a departure from these Rules necessary to avoid immediate danger.???

That said, an easy way to remember right of way is to treat nav lights like traffic lights. if you see the other vessels green light (stbd side) you are the stand on vessel. If you see their red light ( port) you are give way vessel.

Thankfully I haven???t come across many idiots.
Haven???t you seen the video floating around the internet of a boat with people fishing in it being run over by another boat??? Scary!
