A few recent Steelhead trips........

You wont't get much of a report outta me! Just some pics and tips! I know I'm gonna come off as an A-hole and yeah I like to toot my own horn sometimes so here ya go! Lol!

Seriously though, if you want to be a succesful Steelheader you need to do your research, put in the effort, take chances and spend ALOT of time on the rivers. Being versatile, willing to drive and KEEPING YOUR MOUTH SHUT (not making interenet posts for 100's or even 1000's to read) when you find them is how to make this sport enjoyable. As much as some of you guys like to share info and hope for reports there is nothing better than fishing untouched, Chrome filled water without a soul in site! Getting the first shot at pods of fresh fish can mean the difference between non stop action or picking away at leftover fish in a neutral mood and the ones that have already been stung.

This post could be alot longer but it was too damp for my DSLR friday, we were into over 100 fish and only passed one angler on our walk............

Heres some of the better of the 2500 or so pics in the last month........

Read again bobo he said they took 2500 pictures and hooked 100 fish in a month with that many guys like you said would be very easy read the post before you trash a guy as far as handling fish it looked to me most of them were in water and released quickly

LOL!!!!.....I said 2500 pics not fish! No I haven't been averaging 25 fish a day, probably a dozen or so thus far this fall. Keep in mind, just because your favourite trib has been low, clear and a somewhat tougher to fish than usual there are other systems that fish better with minimal rain. Not sure why your attacking me exactly? Did I offend you in some way?

Not sure where I said I was an elite steelheader? Just a guy that knows his sh!t and loves to get out on the river. If that makes me elite so be it.......

"man handle fish"? Go F#$&yourself!!! All fish I catch are handled with the utmost care, either gloved, landed in a rubberized net or barehanded and kept in or over the water. The camera is always ready to go as the fish is landed, hook popped, couple quick snaps and they're gone. Alot of fish don't end up cooperating for a quick pic and I'm fine with that. As anyone I have fished with will tell you my fish handling techniques are more than adequate to best ensure survival of all the Steelhead I release.

Note that not ALL fish were not released unharmed, I harvested 3 fish in the last month, likely my total take for the season.

Cheers!

Josh

Thanks Duckman!

Actually Friday was a 100 hookup day for us, tagged near 70 myself. It was one of those days when everything lined up and the right decisions were made.

Not hard to take 100-200 pics a day with the camera on burst mode, I take alot of scenery stuff too......

Josh

Thanks for that huge photo spread Josh. I think I just used up my bandwidth quota for the day. Great looking fish.

Josh, thanks for the post and all the great pics to enjoy. Don't pay any attention to Bobo as he regualarily gets off on sarcastically attacking anyone that has fishing success. I don't know if he's on crack or just simply loves being a JACKASS!!! But please keep up the posts for those of us that love the outdoors and genuinely appreciate them.

Great pics Josh. Most of us really appreciate you posting. I am an avid Steelheader, but don't get out as much as I use to, as I have a young son at home. Bobo, it is comments like yours that keep people from posting. You alwayys talk about all these fish you catch, but we never see proof.

i think its great that u shared those pics with us im not able to fish anymore but i enjoy the positive comments, it brings a lot of good memories and those smiles on your faces are priceless

The definition of a report!

Its too bad not everyone can enjoy it.

" nobody catches more trout than me, nobody"

Bobo, are you related to Mel Lastman of the Bad Boys furniture chain.

Bobo you're absolutley clueless! Lol! Every been to a fish lift? Guess they must all die!? I land my fish quicker than just about anyone, most hit the bank in between 10-30 seconds and never over a minute. None of them spend more than literally a few seconds out of the water which is more than acceptable. I believe that I set an excellent example in terms of fish handling......

I find it strange that you are trying to pick me apart when there are so many obviously bad examples of fish handling on the net.

That's me giving the fish a kiss by the way, when you see me on the river be sure to say hi so I can put a face to your donkey ass......better yet, post a pic of yourself so I can tell you where to go in person if I ever bump into you on the river......Go honk on yourself "Bobo"........Great name by the way but we already know your a d!ck........

Josh

josh, excellent work as usual. do you fish any of the smaller erie tribs or stick to waters a bit farther north? the reason i ask, and i understand this is a rather broad statement, is because i was wondering if erie steelhead prefer different presentations than fish from huron or do the same tactics generally work for both?

seeing as you obviously know your stuff, what would be the single most important piece of advice that you could give to someone who's new to steelheading?

one day i may have to finally take you up on your offer to join you. hell, i probably wouldn't even bother taking a rod as i'd be too intent on watching and learning :D

I fish any decent sized trib on Erie, Huron and GB along with some other occasional trips.....

General rule of thumb, big and bright for the dirtier tribs and smaller more neutral stuff in cleaner water. Like I said, that's generalizing it, fresh fish lower in the systems can be very aggresive towards large bright offerings even in clearer water. Another thing to keep in mind is when temps drop and fish go into their nearly dormant overwintering mode it can take something large, bright, flashy, stinky or loud to catch thier attention and wake them up in the coldest months.

Experiment with tactics other than roe.....I almost always run a tandem rig with a bead above a bag this time of year, some days the fish can show a real preference for one or the other. Bright beads can be very effective in stained water as they are opaque and much more visible than a roe bag of the same size.

Plastics also have thier days, a wacky rigged pink or white trout style worm is a go to for me if the fish are off other baits or have slowed down. Dont be afraid to add some movement by twitching them occasionally in really slow water.

I could go on and on but to be honest, being where the fish are, presentation and being confident in your approach are the most important things. Steelhead are not the brainiacs of the fish world, they are relatively easy to catch once you understand thier basic habits and have the skills to put your offering in front of them consistently.

Spend the time on the water, be observant and experiment, you'll get there sooner or later!

If you ever have any other questions feel free to email me! joshroelofsen(at)hotmail.com

I'm more than happy to help out anyone with rigging and techniques.

Good luck!

Josh

The tactics are the same for all great lakes tribs. You just have to adjust your set up (delth/shotting etc.) everywhere you go.

Some tribs have many, many more fish, and if youre new to steelheading, a trip to some Lake O tribs is a great way to learn. Get a couple buddies and go for a road trip. Check the graphs. Lots of creeks minutes within each other. No better way to learn then to put yourself right in the middle of a pool of fish!

Ha ha Josh, 10 to 30 seconds for a trout eh? This story keeps getting better. I can't believe you can say you can catch 70 fish in one day and then suggest they all came in in under 30 seconds. You are making yourself sound like a fool. What the hell does the fish ladder have to do with fishing? Are you reeling them in first? Pure stupid is what you are my friend. As for you being a tough guy, anytime you want to meet up at the river pm me, I'll give you lesson you won't forget.

I will meet you on the river for a chat, just to find out who the hell you are.......Pick the spot, I'm not showing you any of mine. Thursday???

And i'll ask you again, could you please do us a favor and post a pic of yourself so that we all know who this mysterious master angler is!? I'd also like to able to recognize you when we have this meet up on the river.....

Thanks!

Josh
