Mitchell’s bay Feb 8th

Well we thought Sunday would be the last day on the ice at Mitchell’s bay but without getting the rain that was expected Monday we figured the ice was still good and headed out yesterday for one last kick.

The bite was hot, and we ended up catching tons of perch and easily could have filled a two man limit.

Interestingly they were packed full of minnows, and even some with crappies in their guts!

They were absolutely hammering my bait (check out the photo with the red head of a lipless crank visible through the skin after being totally engulfed in the fishes mouth).

Thanks @Fishermanpaul for your update, and that’s excellent perch fishing for you, etc.!! 👍👍 I doubt that there will be much “SAFE” ice left after todays plus 10 degree Fahrenheit weather, with up to 25 millimeters of rain on top of that!! Glad to read though that there was some perch fishing success happening here in Southwestern,Ontario, due to the unusual warmer weather we been having so far this winter. Enjoy your perch fry to you all!! 🐟🐟🐟🐟😋😉👍🙂

The ice will for sure be done now! I was spudding everywhere out there and some spots were soft yesterday… can only imagine what it would be like today!

Very true @Fishermanpaul and the remainder of the ice will likely be gone after today, and too bad!! If by chance I do get “itchy” enough to go ice fishing,a trip up North somewhere for myself would be planned,or I will just basically wait for the soft water season to come, and fish for perch out of my boat somewhere, such as on Lake St.Clair, or Long Point Bay. Tight lines & Fish ON!! 🚤🎣🐟🐟🐟🐟😉👍🙂

The prey fish look more like rock bass than crappie.

I’m not sure exactly, but I thought they looked a bit more like crappie. Especially since the eye wasn’t fully red, I figured the bit of red was blood but at the bottom you can see the eye is still white. It also appears that fingerling rock bass have more of a protruding eye as well compared to the crappie.

So hard to tell though!

I hear you @Fishermanpaul it’s tough to say goodbye to the ice 🧊 🥃!! Oops 😬!! wrong 😑 emoji’s!! lol 😆 🧊🎣 😉 I still have my ice fishing tackle on standby, for I am still looking forward to trying out some new ice fishing lure’s somewhere, that I had bought recently. In the meantime, I am now waiting for the Thames River to drop back down again, from the flood which has started recently, from all of this rain today, and the melting snow on top of that. There should be some walleye’s around after this flood, and here’s hoping 🤞 for a great walleye spring fishing 🎣 season. A photo from on top of Fanshawe Dam,last Tuesday,February 7,2023 when the Thames River was low,but now the Thames River will be dangerously high!! Be Safe!! 🎣🐟🐟🐟🐟😉 CHEERS!
☕️ & Tight Lines to All!! 👍🙂
